Making the Most of your Makeup Trial

Having become busy with makeup trials recently, I thought I’d share some tips on how to get the most out of your trial makeup session. These tips apply to any bride researching bridal makeup artists, but also apply to anyone requiring any kind of makeup trial so I hope you find them helpful!
Research your artist in advance. Most working makeup artists will have their own signature makeup style, and will regularly update their various social media accounts, sharing relevant information like recent work, products in their kit, and recent reviews. This makes it easier for you to decide if your chosen artist suits your makeup style, budget and principles. Being an artist that only uses cruelty free brands, I will not carry any brands that are tested on animals or any that are sold in mainland China. Learn about your chosen artist and make sure you’re happy with the ethics of the brands they invest in.
Prepare your skin in advance. It’s never too early to start an individualised bridal skincare routine to suit your skin type. Makeup will only look as good as the skin underneath it, so it is worth the extra effort to maximise your chances of flawless skin on your big day. Drink lots of water, and cleanse tone & moisturise as a minimum
Communicate with your artist. Work out in advance what you do and do not like in terms of your makeup look. Think about coverage- do you want sheer or full coverage? Do you like dewy fresh skin or do you prefer a matte look? Do you prefer matte shadows or do you enjoy satin and shimmer finishes? Working all this out in your mind before your trial will mean your makeup artist can narrow down what you’re after. If you’re really not sure what you’re after, your makeup artist is trained to understand what will work for you!
Photographs. I’d suggest that on your trial day you have to hand some photos of the typical makeup look you usually wear, better yet bring your makeup bag along! Some photos of the makeup look you’d like, and some photos of makeup you don’t like! Together artist and client can discuss what will work best for your own unique features.
Wear white! Or whatever colour you’re wearing on the big day. If you can wear a similar neckline, even better! This helps you to visualise the final look, and see how the colour of your dress will set your skin and makeup off on the day.
Think about the time of day of your trial. Understandably, many trials take place in the evening when clients are free after work commitments etc. I personally think the best time of day for a trial is in the mid morning. This will usually resemble the approximate time of you wedding day makeup so you will get the best idea of how products will wear on your skin over the course of you wedding day or event. Also, morning appointments mean your mua will be applying makeup in natural daylight, and therefore colours will show true on your skin.
Relax! I promise you, your makeup artist wants you to look and feel sensational both at your trial and on the big day. Trials can take 1.5-2 hours per person including a client consultation beforehand, so allow yourself plenty of time. Prepare for your artist to take lots of notes and photographs to refer to on the day. Above all, enjoy the experience and rest assured that everything will run smoothly on the big day!
